What Insurance Do Tractor-Trailer Drivers Need?

Tractor-trailer drivers must carry minimum amounts of commercial auto insurance. This coverage helps protect the motor carrier or owner-operator from liability lawsuits if the tractor-trailer driver causes an accident resulting in property damage or injuries to others.

Contact the Integrity Network Insurance Group agents in Pflugerville, Texas, to learn more about the types of insurance tractor-trailer drivers may need and to get a personalized quote.

Why Do Truck Drivers Need Commercial Auto Insurance? truck driver smiling at camera
Federal law requires owner-operators or motor carriers to carry commercial auto insurance policies. All tractor-trailers, including leased units, must have liability coverage. Options for coverage depend on the truck type, the driver and the goods they haul.

Liability coverage helps pay for third-party property damage and injuries. There are two types of liability coverage included with a commercial auto liability policy:

  • Property damage liability insurance helps pay for damage to someone else’s property caused by the tractor-trailer driver.

  • Bodily injury liability coverage helps pay for medical bills associated with injuries sustained by other people in an accident caused by the tractor-trailer driver.

The best way to decide which types and amounts you may need for your trucking business is to consult an independent agent with experience initiating insurance policies for owner-operators. Your agent will help you fulfill federal and state rules about liability coverage and recommend additional insurance to protect the business.

What Types of Insurance Are Available for Semi-Truck Drivers?
In addition to liability coverage, your agent may recommend the following policies:

  • Collision insurance. This policy helps pay for damages to your tractor-trailer sustained in an accident.

  • Comprehensive insurance. This policy helps cover damages resulting from an incident other than an accident, such as fire, vandalism or weather damage.

  • Medical payments/personal injury protection. This policy helps pay medical bills if the truck driver or passenger is hurt in a crash. It may also cover other losses, including lost income.

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance. This policy helps pay to fix or replace a tractor-trailer after a wreck caused by a third party without proper insurance coverage.

Many tractor-trailer drivers also consider the following additional policies to help expand their coverage:

  • Bobtail. This policy helps cover damages that occur when the truck does not have a trailer attached.

  • Trailer interchange. This policy helps pay for damages to a trailer when someone other than the owner uses it to haul cargo.
