Trucking Safety Tips For Winter

Trucks in WinterWhen it comes to snow and slick roads, every moment is critical to truck drivers. Winter weather conditions can change quickly and put everyone on the road at risk. As a trucking company owner or driver, there are several things you can do to minimize some of these risks and provide for better outcomes every time you get behind the wheel.

Tips for Truck Drivers

The first and most important thing is for you to pull your drivers together and talk about what winter weather means. Also discuss what they should do and should not do when it comes to heading out onto the road.
  • Ensure drivers do a pre-trip inspection. This should include checking wiper blades and tires, as well as all fluid levels and lights.
  • Talk about black ice, which even experienced driver can have trouble seeing. It's often found under bridges and overpasses. Intersections are also a common area of concern.
  • Drivers also need to be more prepared on any trip. This means taking alternative routes instead of traversing treacherous streets. It also means they should be allowing for extra time on any trip.
  • Extra space is always a good thing. This can help any truck to compensate for the poor traction on roadways. It may be best to triple your standard distance behind vehicles. Cruise control is rarely a good thing.
  • Talk about ways to handle skidding, including taking the foot off the gas and moving into neutral quickly.

Take a Look at Your Insurance Plan

This is also a good time to take a closer look at your trucking insurance. Specifically, you will want to ensure your coverage levels are acceptable and that the policy is up to date in terms of payment. This can give you a bit of extra confidence that everything is okay if an accident should occur.

When it comes to trucking insurance, keep your rates low this year by helping your team to learn how to avoid accidents. Take a few minutes to update your policy if you need to, but by far the most important thing for companies to do is to focus on improving drivers' ability to react to road conditions.

Stay safe on the road. Call Integrity Network Insurance Group, LLC at (512) 989-6006 for more information on the trucking insurance policies we offer.
