Many small and medium sized businesses delight at the idea of outsourcing work if it can save them time and money. But, with so many options, where should you begin? Follow these tips for successful outsourcing.
  • Finding the right vendors or freelancers is similar to hiring full-time employees in the sense that you should review their portfolios and conduct an interview. Even though outsourcing can save time in the long run, it may take an initial time investment while you find the right candidates with the right qualifications. Don’t be afraid to address your questions and concerns.
  • Never choose the cheapest vendor. Ever heard the saying “you get what you pay for?” A mid-range, high-quality vendor can still save your business money, while providing better, more reliable solutions. Vice-versa, don’t select the most expensive vendor simply because you think that price equates to quality. Thoroughly evaluate your options before making a decision.
  • Determine the tasks you wish to outsource. It’s important to control the work that represents the values and goals of your business. For example, a content company should not outsource writing projects. But secondary tasks, such as data entry or accounting, can be outsourced in order to keep in-house focus on the primary tasks.
  • When striking a deal with a vendor or freelancer, clearly define the project(s) with detailed deliverables and scheduling so you can receive an accurate price quote. Write up a contract that specifies everything you’ve discussed. If changes occur along the way, ensure that both parties fully understand the new agreement and put it in writing.
  • Reach an agreement upfront in regards to who owns the work upon completion. Be sure to discuss what you plan to do with the work.
  • Since outsourced projects are done out of your sight, plan a weekly or monthly meeting with the vendor or freelancer to touch base on progress and address any concerns. These meetings can take place over the phone, via video conference or in person.
