When filing a claim with business insurance after a robbery, there are three things that greatly impact the ease of filing. Many business owners make the mistake of assuming that making a claim to their insurance company will be simple. They think that the only thing they will need to do is tell the insurance company the events that occurred, and the company will cut them a check right away. This is not the way that insurance claims are handled. Proper preparation, reporting, and taking the time to follow up with the company are essential when filing any claim.
Proper Preparation
Keeping documentation in an organized and uniform fashion can make filing a claim much easier. Provide the insurance company with a detailed list of any items that were taken and the events that occurred. If possible, invest in a surveillance system that will show the company the events that occurred during a robbery or burglary.
Proper Reporting
When a business is robbed, the first thing to do is call the police. Have a detailed report made and if the police are able to capture the criminal, get his or her information to provide to the insurance company. With a detailed police report in hand, contact the insurance provider and let them know what happened. More than likely, they will send an insurance adjuster to evaluate the situation. Make copies of any videotapes and paperwork available to the adjuster. Indicate all of the damage that was caused, as well as a list of everything that was taken.
Follow Up With the Insurance Provider
It is important to stay diligent on finding out the progress of a claim. There are times when a company can be inundated with claims, and it may take a while to get results. It’s important to get timelines from the insurance representative to ensure that the ball keeps rolling. To prevent a claim from sitting in a pile on someone’s desk for an extended period of time, follow up frequently. Information regarding the claim should be available within a few weeks. If it takes more than a month or two to receive any information about the claim, contact the company again and let them know that consulting legal counsel will be the next step if they do not provide information within the week. If no response is forthcoming, hire an attorney and discuss options regarding the insurance claim.
