If you're a long-haul trucker, your company likely provides trucking insurance when you haul a load.
However, doesn't this commercial policy always cover you?
The answer is no.
When you are on the road and your truck cab is attached to a trailer, trucking insurance will likely cover your risks. But, eventually, you will drop off your load and unhook the trailer.
You might still drive the cab for work purposes without a trailer attached. This situation is called bobtailing. When bobtailing, commercial insurance might not cover you.
Many employers require you to carry a type of coverage called bobtail insurance. Bobtail insurance protects you financially when you are still operating the cab of the truck, but do not have a trailer attached.
There are certain situations where you need bobtail insurance.
- Bobtail insurance will help if you are still on the job, but are not carrying a load.
- Bobtail insurance will take effect when you drive the cab without the trailer. This is the case regardless of whether you are on a scheduled dispatch or not.
With bobtail insurance, you'll maintain coverage during times when you're between hauling loads, or when you drive your cab to its garage or storage. If you have an accident in any of these situations, it is likely that the damages and liability interests will be covered by your insurer.
Bobtail insurance coverage generally comes with about $1 million in liability coverage, although coverage limits can be higher than that. Premiums generally cost less than $60 a month.
Your company may require you to pay for bobtail coverage, or it might provide the coverage itself. It is always best to check with your company or contractor to see how much coverage they require you to have.
Remember, bobtail coverage might not work in every situation where you are not dispatched. In some situations, you might need another type of insurance called non-trucking liability insurance. This type of insurance will probably work better when you operate your cab for personal use.
Regardless whether you need bobtail insurance or non-trucking liability insurance, we will work with you to make sure that you find the right coverage. Call Integrity Network Insurance Group, LLC at (844) 524-4744 for a free trucking insurance quote.
